Huge speed differences between cmd prompt and window

Hi
There is a huge speed difference between running Qbasic
program from an xp window vs opening the command prompt, navigating
to the same directory and executing the same program. The command
prompt runs around 10 times faster. I was trying to measure the
speed difference of my laptop running on battery vs plugged into
the wall when I ran into this. I have searched the Qbasic forum
and couldn't find an explanation. The program is a simple for next
loop that counts up a couple million. I'm sure this is well known,
I just couldn't find the answer to why this happens. Thanks
